A Matter of Principle

A thousand decisions go into every design. Exemplar cognitive experience design (Design with Ai) begins with answering the whys with fundamental truths that serve as a foundation for a system of belied of a chain of reasoning. The following principles are a set of values that shall act as compass for you and your team while making important decisions throughout your projects or products. These universal tenets have the power to unify all your collaborators around what is most important to you and humans, customers and constituents.

Human Effects (HumanFx). Human obsessed Cognitive Experience Design strives to enhance human ability, not replace it or cause harm. Human agency is paramount balancing interaction between people and algorithms in a manner that equitably compliments human skills and weaknesses in order to promote human control and skillful action.

Transparent Truth. Trustworthy Cognitive Experience Design plainly explains how a system, invention, product or service comes to a conclusion, decision, projection or prediction with mechanisms like data analysis progress indicators, corpus sourcing, confidence scores and explanation interfaces.

Breaking Bias.  Unprejudiced Cognitive Experience Design begins with hiring and including people with diverse abilities from divergent backgrounds, cultures and disciplines with an atmosphere that encourages respect intellectual debate. Unified in purpose Cognitive Experience Design practices pledge to counteract human, data and algorithmic bias by putting in place an oversight processes to analyze and address the system’s purpose, constraints, requirements and decisions in a clear and transparent manner.

Privacy Pledged. Wise Cognitive Experience Design builds and communicates processes that protect and handle data with stakeholders that may interact with the system directly and/or indirectly. All data collected observes privacy laws, limited by design and deleted upon human request.

Systematic Sanctuary. Secure Cognitive Experience Design protects humans with strong safety and security practices to avoid unintended results that create risks of harm. Ai powered and autonomous inventions shall use in Ai safety research that tests in constrained environments, with proper monitoring of their operation after deployment.

Algorithmic Accord. Authentic Cognitive Experience Design brings about products and services that produce enduring relationships, that do not create an unhealthy emotional dependencies.

Empathetic Analytics. It is not uncommon for teams to get stuck on default accuracy targets, doing everything possible to increase percentages naively. Symbiotic Cognitive Experience Design develops processes to ensure accuracy and cost metric functions are aligned to the domain-specific applications that go beyond accuracy, and understand the performance of the model.

Inclusive Design. Inclusive Cognitive Experience Design empowers everyone and engages all people respectfully, equally and with dignity — never virtue signaling or promoting empty promises.

Radical Simplicity. Exemplary cognitive experience design removes complexity from life.

Wise Works. Healthy Cognitive Experience Design accelerates new ideas that work for everyone, everywhere, everyday.

Cognitive Experience Designers Ethical Boundaries.

As builders and designers who use Ai, we hold a vast share of the collective influence. We are creating systems that will impact billions of people. The use of Artificial intelligence is rapidly growing in capability, impact and influence. As designers who invent AI powered systems, it is an imperative to understand the ethical considerations of our work. A tech-centric focus that solely revolves around improving the capabilities of an intelligent system doesn’t sufficiently consider human needs. As an ethical Cognitive Experience, AI must be designed and deployed in a manner that is aligned with the values and ethical principles of a society or community it affects. Cognitive Experience Design Ethics are based on well-founded standards of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to do, usually in terms of rights, obligations, benefits to society, fairness, or specific virtues.

To create and foster trust and synergistic relationship between humans and machines, you commit to the ethical resources and standards available for reference during the designing, building, and maintenance of Ai powered designs. Groups like the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems, should be mirrored in businesses, governments, communities and working groups of all sizes. Cognitive Experience Designers should never work in a vacuum and must stay in tune with users’ needs and concerns. Constant improvement and assessment is key to ensuring that design teams address users’ concerns. It’s our collective responsibility to understand and evolve these ethical focus areas as AI capabilities increase over time.

These Cognitive experience design focal areas provide an intentional framework for establishing an ethical foundation for designing Ai powered systems.  With this pledge Cognitive Experience designers commit to not deploy smart systems in the following areas:

  1. Creations that cause or are likely to cause overall harm. Where there is a material risk of harm, cognitive experience designers will proceed only where the benefits substantially outweigh the risks, and will incorporate appropriate safety constraints.
  2. Weapons or other technologies whose principal purpose or implementation is to cause or directly facilitate injury to people or the planet
  3. Technologies that gather or use information for surveillance violating internationally accepted norms.
  4. Inventions whose purpose contravenes widely accepted principles of human rights and international law.

As the practice of cognitive experience design deepens, this list will evolve.
